Whether your dining space is a formal room, a casual eat-in setup in the kitchen or something in between, you’ll need inspiration for combining style and function.
10. Fresh Life

In this Atlanta home, Heather Wren Interiors reused the clients’ beloved dining table and chairs, painting and reupholstering the chairs to go with the room’s elegant new look. Mixing in host and hostess chairs and freshening up the rest of the room with wallpaper, lighting, art and a rug gave the old pieces new life.

9. Divide and Conquer

Atmosphères Design Studio and Mesure created separation between the kitchen and dining area in this Paris home without sacrificing natural light. A wood shelving partition provides visual delineation while allowing light and views to be shared by the spaces.

8. Alfresco Feel

Fraher & Findlay Architects’ goal was to connect this London kitchen and dining space with the backyard. It lowered this part of the house to the same level as the patio and opened up the walls with large windows and glass doors. The result is a light and airy dining area that feels like it’s part of the outdoors.

7. Warm and Inviting

Santa Cruz Green Builders gave this Northern California home modern organic style. A woven rug, a pendant light and plants help delineate the dining area within the open plan. But it’s the simple rich wood dining table and chairs that signal this is an inviting, casual spot for gathering.

6. Scandinavian Meets Parisian

In this Paris apartment, Transition Interior Design enhanced the quintessentially Parisian architectural bones while layering in Scandinavian modern style. The chevron-patterned light wood floors, ornate moldings and Art Noveau mirror are quintessentially Paris. But the table, chairs and light fixtures hail from Denmark and Norway. This furniture creates a cohesive feel with Scandinavian modern-inspired built-ins the designers added throughout the apartment.

5. Peacock Pattern

The jumping-off point for this lovely Boston-area dining room was the homeowner’s beloved peacock-patterned drapes. Courtney Ellen Interior Design complemented them with green-blue grasscloth wallpaper and a mirror that picks up on the circles in the fabric’s pattern. Lighter neutral colors on the rug, wainscoting and chandelier shades balance the darker elements in the room.

4. Cozy Corner

In this San Francisco Bay Area home, interior designer Natalia Avalos created a cozy dining area by wrapping a built-in banquette around a corner. Open shelves, plants, artwork, a pendant light, throw pillows and a rug cozy up the space.

3. Bookshop Cafe Vibes

Combining dining and library spaces gives this Medfield, Massachusetts, dining space the inviting atmosphere of a bookshop cafe. J.M. Bryson Construction Management outfitted the space with a combination of shelves for display and cabinets for storing linens, serveware and board games. The homeowners added lots of favorite things to the shelves, giving the room a personal feel.

2. Old Meets New

Studio AM Architecture & Interiors and Kelly Hohla Interiors renovated this 1910 Mediterranean Revival home in Seattle. In the update, the cabinetry, trim and beams respect the architectural history of the home. But the furnishings and other impermanent elements like the patterned tile, dining furniture and window treatments give it a fresh layered-over-time look.

1. Traditional Update

Granite State Cabinetry remodeled this Concord, New Hampshire, kitchen with classic traditional style. In the light-filled breakfast area, the homeowner layered more updated furniture and accessories, including a contemporary table, modern Windsor chairs and a pendant light composed of gold leaves. The result is a traditional yet homey spot for dining.
